Advanced First Aid (OFA3)

The Advanced First Aid course, formerly known as Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 3, is a comprehensive program designed for individuals designated as Advanced Workplace First Aid Attendants, particularly in remote or high-risk workplaces. This course equips participants with the skills necessary to manage complex medical and trauma emergencies, perform thorough patient assessments, and provide extended care until professional medical assistance is available. The curriculum aligns with the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard Z1210-17 for Workplace First Aid Training and meets WorkSafeBC regulations.

Duration:
70 hours (10 days), as per WorkSafeBC requirements.

March 10th to March 21st, 2025

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 16 years.
  • Good physical health and fitness to perform required skills.

Completion Requirements:

  • Full attendance and active participation in all course components.
  • Achieve a minimum of 70% on written examinations.
  • Successful demonstration of practical skills and competencies.

Certification:
Upon successful completion, participants receive a WorkSafeBC Advanced First Aid certificate, valid for 3 years.

  1. Introduction to Advanced First Aid
    • Overview of WorkSafeBC regulations and CSA standards.
    • Roles and responsibilities of an Advanced First Aid Attendant.
    • Legal and ethical considerations in the workplace.
  2. Emergency Scene Management
    • Conducting scene assessments and ensuring safety.
    • Prioritizing care using the primary and secondary survey approach.
    • Effective communication and coordination with Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
  3. Patient Assessment
    • Performing comprehensive patient assessments.
    • Monitoring and recording vital signs.
    • Recognizing and managing life-threatening conditions.
  4. Airway and Breathing Management
    • Techniques for opening and maintaining airways.
    • Use of airway adjuncts and oxygen therapy.
    • Managing respiratory emergencies, including asthma and anaphylaxis.
  5. Circulatory Emergencies
    • Recognition and management of shock.
    • Performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and using Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
    • Responding to cardiovascular incidents such as heart attacks and strokes.
  6. Bleeding and Wound Care
    • Controlling external bleeding using direct pressure and tourniquets.
    • Managing internal bleeding and recognizing signs.
    • Proper wound care techniques to prevent infection.
  7. Musculoskeletal Injuries
    • Identifying and treating fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains.
    • Applying splints and immobilization devices.
    • Techniques for safe patient movement and transportation.
  8. Head, Neck, and Spinal Injuries
    • Recognizing signs and symptoms of spinal injuries.
    • Implementing spinal motion restriction protocols.
    • Using cervical collars and spine boards effectively.
  9. Medical Emergencies
    • Managing diabetic emergencies, seizures, and allergic reactions.
    • Recognizing and responding to poisoning and overdose situations.
    • Understanding and addressing environmental emergencies like hypothermia and heatstroke.
  10. Transportation of Injured Workers
    • Preparing patients for transport to medical facilities.
    • Understanding the use of transportation equipment.
    • Ensuring patient safety during transport.
  11. Practical Skills Development
    • Hands-on practice of all skills in simulated scenarios.
    • Realistic drills to build confidence and competence.
    • Continuous assessment and feedback to ensure proficiency.
